Following their 1st place competition performance, the spring show cast and crew will perform “Underdog: The Other Other Brontë” in the auditorium for the campus’ enjoyment on May 4 at 7 p.m.
“I am most excited for the audience to see how our hard work has progressed,” ensemble member sophomore Jack Brummer said. “While we had a rough beginning and a rough middle and a rough end, we are still going to perform it regardless of what actually happens.”
While the ensemble is constantly on stage showing transitions and representing characters in Charlotte Brontë’s imagination, the tech crew adds to the stage environment through their light and sound choices.
“I programmed all the lights,” tech member sophomore Lyra O’Bryant said. “I get a lot of experience [because] most first year techs don’t get to be completely in charge of lights and sound.”
The show they competed with tells the tale of the Brontë sisters, who write under male pseudonyms to rise in the writing industry, through Charlotte’s perspective.
“There’s a lot of themes of betrayal, but also I think some big themes [are] sisterhood, feminism and equality,” lead actress sophomore Marion Robbins said. “I think the show is important today because it shows us [to] never meet your idols, and also don’t ever try to surpass others by hurting them.”
Accompanying its impactful themes, the show reveals an interesting cast of characters including Charlotte Brontë played by Robbins.
“In this play, Charlotte Brontë is the main character, though she’ll never admit it,” Robbins said. “She’s also our unreliable narrator as she talks about how she sabotaged her sisters in order to become the most successful sister. My biggest goal is to make the audience laugh at the absurdity of Charlotte Brontë.”
Along with the performance, theatre kids value who they work with both on and off stage.
“It’s a really good community,” O’Bryant said. “I really enjoy it. I feel like there’s no better clubs that I’ve ever been in.”
