To finish off the season, band and color guard performed their Sonic Boom show Saturday Nov. 8 through Tuesday Nov. 11 at the UIL state competition in San Antonio Texas at the Alamodome taking the title of 7th place in the state.
Senior percussion captain Elijah Silver said that the hard work leading up to their performance was “1000% worth it.”
“The best part of the competition for me was performing the show for the final time and feeling the energy of the crowd reciprocated back towards us,” Silver said. “I will never forget the lifelong memories and friends I made by our united goal of performing at state.”
Their practices started back in band camp over the summer and counted up to around 115 days of rehearsals. Junior color guard captain Jenna Briggle recounted how this time allowed her to get to know people in ways she wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.
“Surface level [it’s] like ‘Oh they’re always at rehearsals,’ but it’s like the five-minute conversations during a water break where it’s like ‘Oh I didn’t know that about her,’” Briggle said. “It’s so much fun to get to know people like that.”
Sophomore trombone player Brody Plumbley said that “each show is a different experience,” and he will miss this season’s performance.
“[My favorite part was] the ambience of the dome,” Plumbley said. “It’s just super cool, and all the notes just really sound amazing.”
Along with the amazement of performing in the Alamodome and getting to know new people, Briggle described the sense of pride that she noticed in the freshmen and has felt herself.
“They finish their last run on finals, and they walked off that field with a sense of pride I hadn’t seen from them before,” Briggle said. “And I remember feeling that sense of pride my freshman/sophomore year. I enjoyed seeing it on their faces too.”
Even with the change in coaches, the color guard team’s returning members were able to learn about their new coaches’ teaching style and power through.
The performance included the “Quien Eres Tu,” “Night Window,” “Turbo Scramjet,” and “Caves,” and now it’s over.
“I will definitely miss Sonic Boom,” Silver said. “It was my favorite show of all four years of high school and a pure joy to perform.”
