Bearcats on the Road to State

The Bearcat Varsity Football team’s season has been going great so far, going undefeated in their district games and throughout playoffs. In regional finals they played against South Oak Cliff and then in quarter finals they played Frisco Reedy. Since the Bearcats won over Reedy, they advance to Semi-finals, where they will play Wichita Falls Rider at AT&T stadium this Friday at 8 p.m.

The game against South Oak Cliff was one of the more difficult games the Bearcats have had this season. Although the Bearcats were able to come out with the win, it wasn’t as high-scoring of a game as the fans are used to. The Bearcats were doing well until halftime when it started pouring rain, which forced the game to be delayed for a total of three hours. It was a close game for the majority of the time with the Bearcats only up by one touchdown until late in the fourth quarter. The Bearcats were able to come out on top leaving the game 28-14 and taking the win.

“South Oak Cliff has (good) players at every position,” Coach Wood said. “They have as fast of a defense as we have seen, and they are not just fast, they are aggressive. From a defensive point of view, we haven’t played anybody as fast as SOC. Our defense had its work cut out for them.”

The Bearcats went into this game knowing that it wouldn’t be just another blowout. The Bears came well equipped with a great defense and a great quarterback.

“We have to play a great game defensively and keep them in check,” Wood said. “They will always be in shotgun and have two running backs in the backfield. But their quarterback is their (best) player – he can throw it and he can run it.”

After it was all said and done, after the three hour lightning delay and after the tied game, the Bearcats were able to pull ahead once again, sending them straight to quarter finals, where they played against Reedy and won 26-16.

“It was a physical game, and Reedy is a great football team, but we are too,” Wood said. “I am proud of our kids. We get to get out of here with a win, and we get to play another week.”

The Bearcats have had a relatively easy path with game scores such as 66-0 against Waco and 52-6 against Everman. The game against Reedy was expected to be a good game as both teams had been doing very well this season. Although the Bearcats came out with the win, it was not nearly as high scoring as other previous games.

If the Bearcats are able to win against Rider then they will advance to State where they will play the winner of the Calallen versus Fort Bend Marshall game at AT&T Stadium.
