Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Review

After waiting four years, fans can rejoice as the newest installment of Super Smash Bros. was released Dec. 7. This is the first of the franchise to be released on the Nintendo Switch, and therefore it has many new features.

Smash Ultimate has every character from all the previous games in the franchise, and even adds 11 new fighters. In total there are 74 playable fighters and there will be new characters added in the future. When starting the game there are only eight playable fighters; the rest have to be unlocked by beating a new character in a fight.

One of the main new features are “Spirits,” which are trophies that can can be collected and equipped to give players special advantages in battle. There are over 1200 Spirits and more are on the way. One of the cool things about the Spirits is that they are all characters from the fighter’s games and can range from very recognizable to extremely obscure references. Spirits can also level up and get stronger until they reach their max level 99, at that point some Spirits can evolve into stronger versions.

Spirits can be captured by going to the spirit board and trying to earn one through its challenge. The next way to unlock Spirits is through the “World of Light” campaign mode. In World of Light, players are tasked at setting their friends free from the grasps of the evil Galeem. Players start out playing as Kirby until they unlock more characters by fighting them. Players can also earn Spirits by walking over to them and doing their challenge there.

Many of the old features return as well, such as Classic mode, Smash mode, and Practice mode. It also still includes the possibility of fighting against eight other friends or CPU. Online play is available, but it’s in early stages and isn’t very stable right now. If players want to play online, it is probably better to wait until it gets adjusted and fixed.

Amiibo figures are still compatible with the switch and will provide a tough challenge as they level up and figure out your strategies in battle.

Overall, this installment of Smash is one of the best yet; it has the most characters, stages and is portable with the Switch’s mobile capabilities. With all the features in this game there is no reason why it can’t be enjoyed whether on an airplane or sitting on a couch playing with eight friends.
