“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” Spells Success

Mortals beware, something witchy has arrived on Netflix. The new Netflix original series, the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is a modern reboot of the iconic sitcom, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” The first season was dropped at the end of October, but it didn’t gain momentum and a following until the middle of November. A Christmas special will be added Dec. 14, and the second season will come out April 5, 2019. A second season being announced so quickly in combination with the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” superfans may spell success, and its likeable and relatable characters, dark themes and struggle between the mortal and witch world may cast a spell on viewers.

Sabrina Spellman, played by Kiernan Shipka, is the main character and half witch, who keeps a kind and sweet demeanor most of the time. She’s a loving girlfriend, compassionate friend and naturally talented witch. She’s almost too cute at times and has a meek appearance like a mouse would. But she makes up for her meekness by coming back as a fierce force of fury.

Sabrina’s two best mortal friends, Rosalind and Susie, are nothing short of spectacular either. Rosalind, played by Jaz Sinclair, is a strong activist who sticks up for herself no matter the status or power of the person she’s defending herself or her friends against. She loves her friends as much as she loves fixing injustices. Susie, portrayed by Lachlan Watson, is small and unassuming, and quite shy at first, but as the season progresses, she learns to be her full self and unlocks some serious bravery. Some fans may even relate to her gender identity struggle and being transgender.

The weakest character arc is Harvey, played by former Disney star Ross Lynch, Sabrina’s mortal boyfriend. He’s a pretty stagnant character throughout and has little character development. A major fan favorite is Sabrina’s cousin, Ambrose, played by Chance Perdomo, who is a sarcastic, gay ball of joy and quotable lines. Although he’s not an insanely important character, he’s cute and someone many teens can relate to personality wise.

Warning: if Satanic imagery makes you uncomfortable, this is not for you. Like its counterpart “Riverdale” on the CW, there’s a very dark twist. Also like how “Riverdale” is based upon Archie Comics, the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is based upon the “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” comics. But unlike Riverdale, the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”  is actually good and twists the macabre into classic characters. There’s plenty of good and bad witches and witchcraft, Satanism and human sacrifices. The series also doesn’t try to make its characters solve murders or make their dads serial killers. Every dark or bad thing that happens doesn’t feel like it’s been forced upon the series, it comes naturally to the themes and plot. To add to the already supernatural vibes, there’s also a few ghosts and women who get premonitions. If you enjoy witchcraft and morbid themes, this show will work fine for you.

Apart from the amazing characters and dark ideas, the worldly struggle between witches and humans and Sabrina’s internal struggle between good and bad is interesting to watch unfold. Witches and mortals are physically close, but worlds apart in ideology. Mortals subscribe to Christianity, have morals that lie on the ‘good’ side of the line and are mortal. Witches age slower, are Satanists and follow what the “Dark Lord” says to do, even if it would require crossing a friend or a loved one.

Sabrina’s conflict stems from the ideological conflict between humans and witches, as she was raised as both. She has ties to the mortal world, having friends and a boyfriend in it. But she also enjoys her witch powers and her witch family. She also struggles with the terms she’d have to follow as a full witch, like following Satan’s every whim if he asks her to. Although I doubt any real person has had this exact conflict, many people, especially young adults, have gone through events or times where it’s hard to tell what’s good and what’s bad, and may be able to relate to Sabrina’s struggle.

The “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is a must watch, and the charming yet dark series will likely have viewers on the edge of their seats waiting for season two. It’s the most binge-worthy Netflix original series right now,, and those who enjoy the macabre will be left in a trance. Not to mention Salem, Sabrina’s adorable protector. It’s hard to pass up a series with an adorable cat.
