The academic University Interscholastic League has made record progress over the course of this season.
The team placed in the top three at several invitational meets throughout this year as well as placing first in calculus and second in pre-cal overall at Weatherford College’s 23rd annual Coyote Area Math Championship.
“Aledo didn’t really have an established math team,” senior Jaden Delgado said. “But then last year, it was the first time we took a team to regionals.”
Team members said they put in countless hours to get where they are. Every team member has made individual strides on top of their team accomplishments. Practice is intense, and the team doesn’t rest until the work is done.
“We have the practices, like with our coach here at school,” said Delgado. “But a lot of the time we meet on weekends.”
For competitions, every member of the UIL math team is automatically enrolled in every event. This means that members are competing for several different placements at any given time.
“We do a lot of different things in our meetings such as doing Kahoots to remember our geometry formulas,” junior Madelyn Queen said. “Or we work specifically on a part of math such as studying statistics for our math exam.”
The UIL math team’s tireless dedication has allowed them to make substantial progress and develop themselves as a strong force in competition. They look forward to the area meet April 26, where they hope to advance to regionals.
“I know we are going to regionals,” coach Laura Garcia said. “We’ve got our eyes on state.”
