From collecting feminine products to place in women’s restrooms to creating a pen pal system with students from Stuttgart, Germany, the Artemist Club continues to use its voice towards the student body. With a new advisor for the Artemis Club, the 24-25 school year members take on the position of taking action and allowing the club to remain inclusive.
Senior Audrey Apetez created the club in 2022 after moving to Aledo from Stuttgart, Germany, where she co-founded the feminist club at her old high school. Apetez serves as the president of Artemis, and with this title she was able to contact her old school in Stuttgart to create a pen pal system between members of Artemis at both schools to be able to connect.
“Our first initial pen pal letters will include a sweet care package to be sent with them,” Apetez said. “We are so excited and the president in Stuttgart has kept in contact with me so we can plan together.”
While the pen pal system is new to the Artemis club, their goals of inclusion remain the same. Since the beginning of the school year, the Artemis club has continued to supply the women’s restrooms with feminine products that can be donated by any student to US History teacher Jordan Huemoeller’s room.
“The club will bring in a new stock of feminine hygiene products to put into the bathroom,” Huemoeller said. “So these products are available to students and they can take care of it without having to go home or go to the nurse.”
While focusing on spreading awareness, the Artemis Club also focuses on including all members and creating a positive environment. The Artemis club has meetings every other Wednesday in Huemoeller’s Room 2105 which includes discussing projects and sharing input on different issues.
“As a member of the club, I always try and be someone that other people involved in the club can talk to,” junior member Amber Furlow said. “We all have a lot of input that they can give to the president that’s very receptive.”
As the end of the third quarter awaits, the Artemis Club continues to create a welcoming and better community for the campus. After Apetez graduates, she said she hopes the Artemis club will be “a safe place that people enjoy coming to and a club that can continue to better the community.”
