As the fourth quarter begins, so does the start of prom season. While most seniors spend time dress shopping, booking hair appointments, and securing reservations at their favorite fancy restaurants, senior class officers spend countless hours making sure this prom will be remembered. This year’s theme is Masquerade, which calls for many props and fundraisers to make everything meet high standards.
New this year, principal Michael Martinak urged for class officers to take part and guide the direction of each class as one of the goals for his first year on campus. Through this new position, officers have the chance to start new traditions and uphold a high title.
Senior Amy Ragan serves as class president and has made it her goal to make prom the most enjoyable for all the students attending. In preparation for venue hunting, Ragan visited the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth, to taste test foods to eventually turn into a Google form so everyone can have something enjoyable to eat.
“I’ve learned the importance of having empathy for others and understanding that everyone has a different opinion on things,” Ragan said. “It has taught me the importance of making new connections and being able to grow with the student body and teachers.”
With the importance of inclusion and a theme to stick to at hand, Ragan and senior vice president Maggie Kilburn helped coordinate fundraisers to help support the costs of different aspects that the officers would like to incorporate this year. Ragan and Kilburn have both expressed their opinions on how much they want the rest of the student body to be involved in what will be decided regarding prom and fundraisers.
“We probably work on prom about every day,” Kilburn said. “It has been important for us to have all of these meetings so then we can be active on Instagram and keep everyone involved.”
Since this is the first year for class officers, this has left much pressure upon those involved to meet Martinak’s and the student body’s expectations. Both Ragan and Kilburn have continued to promote fundraisers that were not present in years past. This year the class officers have included graduation yard signs and a dodgeball tournament that all seniors can be a part of to pay for graduation expenses.
“I love what the new student officers have been doing this year,” senior Abigail Pennington said. “It just feels like they are trying to keep us all involved and to make the end of our senior year memorable.”
With deadlines for these fundraisers coming up, the class officers are hoping for more involvement and dedication back from the rest of the student body. Prom will be May 3, and the class officers will be holding a red carpet Promenade from 4:30–6:30 p.m. in the main campus gym to the cafeteria.
“I just can’t wait for everyone to see how much effort we have into our Masquerade theme this year and for everyone to hopefully bring their masks,” Ragan said.
