The varsity boys’ soccer players look to cap off their season as they are on a roll with a 12-3-2, with a district record of 8-1-1, positioning them first in their district.
The team’s recent victories, including a commanding 6-1 win over Chisholm Trail High School, demonstrate not only their skill but also their ability to work together seamlessly. Senior captain Cole Crawford, #14, emphasized how leadership and camaraderie have played a significant role in the team’s success.
“Being a captain has forced me to learn how to become a leader,” Crawford said. “Sometimes you’ve got to tell people to do something that you don’t want to.”
That leadership has helped shape a culture of accountability and support within the squad. Whether on the practice field or under the lights on game day, the Bearcats push each other to be better while maintaining a strong sense of unity.
For some players, the team has helped players get over injuries and mental blocks. Senior defense, Eric Canales, #4, said being part of such a tight-knit team motivates each player to level-up their skills.
“It pushed me to be better so I can be there for them and not let my team down,” Canales said.
Throughout the season, senior Adrian Solis, #9, said the team’s mentality is to keep pushing all the way to that state title.
“I think I can speak on behalf of our team that our hope is winning the state championship,” Solis said. “When our team is in our best condition, there is not a 5A team in Texas that is better than us. If we stay healthy and play as we have been, then we should have a deep run in the playoffs.”
As each player does what they can to strengthen the team, one player has made his mark in team history. Senior Austin “Randy” Randriamahefa, #10, tied the record for the most assists in a game when playing the Azle Hornets.
“It feels good because I was wanting to do that ever since I heard of it,” Randriamahefa said. “Then actually to do it—it’s pretty amazing.”
As for the team, Randriamahefa said, “we think we can do something special,” and senior Elliot Smith said he is excited to see where their determination and skill take them.
“We’ve got a great group of guys who are all like brothers,” Smith said. “We started out playing 6A teams and proved that we could hang with them. We then had some costly injuries, but people have stepped up. We’ve got a lot potential, and we’re hungry.”
Looking ahead, the Bearcats are poised to continue their strong performance with upcoming matches against Granbury, March 4, and Azle, March 7. With determination and faith, Crawford said the boys varsity soccer team are well-positioned for a deep run in the postseason.
“I always tape my rice because I have these two bracelets,” Crawford said. “I write Proverbs, 21:31 on the tape, which says, the horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory comes with the Lord.”
