The stage lights of Grease shone brighter this year with the addition of many new students to the high school theater department. This influx of talent joined the cast and crew in time to bring the beloved 1950s musical to life during performances from Jan. 17 to Jan. 19, adding fresh energy to an already passionate department.
For seasoned actors like senior Mason Steele, Grease offered a unique angle.
“This one’s a little different because I already knew the show,” Steele said. “I’ll listen through all the songs. I’ll look at the sheet music. I’ll first figure out the notes, what I gotta hit, then I’ll add character to it.”
Despite the challenge of integrating a large number of newcomers, the cast worked to create a welcoming environment. The combined cast and crew surpassed 75 this year, culminating in one of the most complex productions yet.
Freshman Cadence Elliot reflects on the positive environment created during the preparation of the musical.
“Oh my lord, everybody is so energetic.” Elliot said, “Not once have I seen anybody complain. Everybody there is just so happy to be there and do whatever we have to do that day.”
Each rehearsal was nothing short of enthusiastic, naturally paving the way for strong connections between upperclassmen and underclassmen. With choreography entirely student-led by seniors Logan Kasper and Lulu Warren, building trust became a key part of the process.
“One of the big things is gaining their trust. They don’t know you. You don’t know them,” senior Jackson Blake said. “Show that you can be someone that’s reliable and someone that can help them in their endeavors, whether that’s acting or just life in general, because theater is a family.”
