The varsity volleyball team are headed to battle Colleyville Heritage High School at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov.15, as their hunt for the state championship continues.
The Ladycats haven’t made it this far in playoffs in seven years, and they aren’t stopping there.
“This year, out of all the years I’ve been here, is the year we have such great talent,” senior libero Ella Meador, #8, said. “We have a great group of seniors who I feel like leads this team really well, and with the playoffs changing, we have a much better shot of going further.”
The first post season game was against Birdville High School Tuesday, Nov. 5, and they won in a four set match 3-1, then against Burleson Thursday, Nov. 7, in a three set match and won 3-0. After those wins, they took on the Amarillo Sandies Tuesday, Nov. 12, to now take on the Panthers for another victory.
Seniors going into playoffs are aware that they are nearing the end of their high school volleyball career, and for some the end of their volleyball career.
“It’ll definitely be bittersweet because I’ve been playing volleyball for nine years,” senior defensive specialist Caroline Pruett, #15, said. “And to know that this is the last team is the last I’ll ever have, and be the last volleyball game I’ll ever be a part of, it’ll definitely be sad, but I’m just really thankful looking back at all the memories we’ve had.”
In the middle of their season, junior middle blocker Sarah Schroeder, #19, got injured and wasn’t able to participate in playoffs. The coaches approached freshman middle blocker Kennedy Christie, #14, and she was able to rise to the occasion to help the Ladycats have enough players going into playoffs.
“They pulled me up from JV because I’m the same position as her, and they just needed another player,” Christie said. “It was a little intimidating at first, but I’m honestly so grateful for this opportunity and being able to be with them.”
While Christie is putting in the work to help take home the win, senior outside hitter Morgan Estevez, #12, said everyone on the team is making the most out of each game.
“This year is really showing me what there is to lose,” Estevez said. “This year everyone is putting everything on the floor. As a senior, it’s encouraging our team and making sure everyone is putting in the same amount of work.”
