Swim Team Dives Toward District in Hopes for State Repeat

With the first five meets of the season down, the swim team looks to make waves this year as they dive into the second half of their season with district at the forefront.

“Last season we did really good,” four year veteran senior Victoria Crews said. “We took a lot of people to state, and it was one of our best seasons, and we expect to have greater success this year.”

Crews was one of five swimmers who competed at state in the spring, along with seniors Haley Roberson, Victoria Crews and Avery Faulkner, and junior Julia Gordy also made state, and the teams hopes to continue that momentum into this season.

“We have a lot of underclassmen, so getting them to a point where they are ready to take on the load of the graduating out senior class, [is important],” swim coach Meghan Roberson. “We are losing seven seniors this year, but we have 12 underclassmen right now, so that’s a really good place to be in.”

The current team size is an advantage from previous years, according to senior Evan Bradley who said this season has the largest group of members he’s seen since joining the team.

“We lost some heavy hitters in the seniors last year,” Bradley said. “Our freshmen that just became sophomores are looking very promising, and they’re kicking butt in that water.”

According to Roberson, the team is looking promising for the remainder of the season.

“Our girls took first, our boys took a very, very close second, and they did that without two of their strongest members,” Roberson said. “It’s really encouraging and that the boys are at that level. “They’re across the board: good people, good students, and they’re really tight-knit. They’re just a really good bunch of kids.”
