As the golf season is underway following the first/second tournament of the year, players share their drive for the game and where they hope it will take them.
“Your shots need to be consistent to play a good round because if they aren’t you have no idea where to aim, or what club to hit,” varsity athlete Sydney Purdon said. “I have been playing golf for six years and playing competitively for two years, so I felt pretty prepared when tryouts came around, but also just having confidence when trying out helped me make the varsity team.”
Throughout their game, athletes said it was important to maintain consistency to improve little parts of their game.
“It is important [to be consistent] so you don’t ruin your whole round,” junior varsity athlete Ainsley English said. “I think I can improve by mentally slowing down.”
Although slowing down during games can improve their current game, others are speeding up to look to the future after high school.
“I want to play in college [for] Vanderbilt or someplace else,” JV athlete Christian Moll said. “I practice for two hours a day, six days a week on consistency with my long shots. Without consistency, you will not be able to always do well.”
Golf practice is held during the eighth period, and continues after school. JV athlete Alec Dolman said his inspiration is professional golfer Scottie Shefler because he’s concise and consistent.
“It is important to improve consistency or else you will fall off your game,” Dolman said. “But I can improve basically everything.”
Throughout the season, Purdon said some days can be challenging, but she does what she can to improve every time she’s on the green.
“I usually play well, but obviously everyone has bad days,” Purdon said. “I can improve my putting by minimizing the amount of putts I take.”
